sudo apt-get install ruby
sudo apt-get install rubygems
sudo apt-get install libxml2-dev
sudo apt-get install libxslt1-dev
sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jre

sudo gem install rubygems-update
sudo update_rubygems

sudo gem install rspec
sudo gem install cucumber (gives error on builder documentation, ignore)
sudo gem install capybara

install the latest version of Chrome
download the latest chromedriver

extract chromedriver from zipfile

sudo cp chromedriver /usr/bin

download latest selenium-server

start the selenium-server “java -jar selenium-yourversion.jar”

download my example feature file Example.zip

unzip my example.zip

start cucumber from the Example directory

See my short screencast for how it should work out:

The whole process should take you about 40 minutes to a hour, depending on your computer and internet speeds.

My idea is to create human readable test scripts to test a web-based application. These tests are then run automated against a browser.

First I installed Cucumber and then created some example files to demonstrate its usage with Selenium on my Ubuntu box.

Install ruby, cucumber and other extensions:

apt-get install ruby
apt-get install rubygems1.8
apt-get install ruby1.8-dev
apt-get install libxml2-dev libxslt1-dev

gem install gherkin
gem install cucumber
gem install webrat
gem install rspec
gem install selenium-client
gem install selenium-webdriver

Then create a directory structure:

mkdir -p cucumber/features/
mkdir -p cucumber/features/step_definitions/
mkdir -p cucumber/features/support/

Create a file google.feature in the folder features containing:

Feature: Search Google

Scenario: Search Google
	Given I have opened "http://www.google.com/"
When I search for "Niels van Reijmersdal"
Then I should see "My personal blog"

Create a file google_feature.rb in the folder step_definitions containing:

Given /^I have opened "([^"]*)"$/ do |url|
        visit url
end
When /^I search for "([^"]*)"$/ do |search|
	fill_in "q", :with => search
	sleep 3
end
Then /^I should see "([^"]*)"$/ do |text|
        response.should contain(text)
end

Create a file env.rb in the folder support containing:

require 'webrat/selenium'
require 'webrat/core/matchers'
require 'rspec'

Webrat.configure do |config|
  config.mode = :selenium
  config.application_framework = :external
  config.selenium_server_address = '127.0.0.1'
  config.selenium_browser_startup_timeout = 60
end

World do
  session = Webrat::Session.new
  session.extend(Webrat::Methods)
  session.extend(Webrat::Selenium::Methods)
  session.extend(Webrat::Selenium::Matchers)
  session
end

Download the latest version of Selenium Server and run it:

java -jar selenium-server-standalone-2.8.0.jar

Start the cucumber from within the cucumber directory:

/var/lib/gems/1.8/bin/cucumber

This should start cucumber and run all its feature files, this should make the selenium server start firefox and execute the commands. The sleep command is pretty ugly, but i am just starting with this selenium, cucumber and ruby combination. When i figured out a good way to check if elements are present with this selenium interface i will update this howto. (Update: Its easier using Capybara, see this blog post for the same example.)

Next steps are to create a dedicated cucumber and selenium machine to keep the test running all the time.

Most stuff here I learned from this blog post (great post about using cucumber with webrat for webtesting). The selenium stuff was scattered around on the web. Also be sure to read the nicely written e-book “The secret ninja cucumber scrolls” for more info on cucumber, gherkin and automated testing. You should be able to read it within two-three hours.

Benodigdheden:

Twee boterhammen (wit of bruin)

Twee tot drie knakworsten

Kaas

Mosterd

Curry of Ketchup

Tosti-ijzer of een Grill

Bereiding:

At first i thought maybe its just broken in Netbeans. But now it seems that the window manager (xfwm4) of Xfce uses CTRL+F# to switch workspaces. After some searching I figured out howto disable this feature. Look for it under the shortcut settings of the window manager and not at the keyboard or workspaces settings. Doh!

Sweden was a really nice place to stay. The food was good, the center of Gothenburg looked nice. Things to remember are on one side “girls with way too short jeans and cans of beer on the streets” and on the other side “women with baby buggy’s hanging around in shopping malls”. Also for a country where alcohol is very expensive we noticed a lot of really really drunk people on the streets at night, but the one guy coming out of taxi and then stumbling in to the bar instead of his bed was really interesting.

But of-course the most of Gothenburg we saw was the inside of the convention center. My sealed pool was pretty decent, but somehow not good enough to make day two, so i would like to share a very fun five color control deck i drafted during the day two side-events.

My first pick was Destructive Force, since i didn’t drafted a Force deck yet (during PT Amsterdam practise) this seemed like a interesting strategy to try out, my second pick was Cultivate and a Sylvan Ranger afterwards, getting a Foresee fourth pick made me add blue to the mix, picking up Clone and Azure Drake along the way. The second booster i first picked a second Cultivate, since with the Force in the deck i needed some ramp to get there. The second pick was a bit awkward, my neighbour passed me a Sun Titan! He picked a Doom Blade over it. Hmm now there was a fourth color to play, but i guessed the mana fixing should be able to support it. The third booster gave me a Day of Judgment, more sweepers, nice! Second pick was a Magma Phoenix, which i shouldn’t have played with only two mountains, after resolving a Force i never wanted to keep the mountains around.

Laying it out on the table for deck building was bringing a lot of joy, i either was way to greedy or this was the most fun and greatest draft deck i ever drafted. My opponents nodded it looked cool indeed, after some debating with myself i decided to add a fifth color to the mix just for gravedigger, i might needed to get some finisher back after i resolved a board sweeper. Here is the final deck:

Maindeck:
Preordain
Llanowar Elves
Wall of Vines
3x Sylvan Ranger
Mana Leak
Negate
2x Brindle Boar
2x Cultivate
Day of Judgment
Gravedigger
Foresee
Azure Drake
Clone
Magma Phoenix
Garruk’s Packleader
Sun Titan
Duskdale Wurm
Destructive Force
Sunpetal Grove
Terramorphic Expanse
7x Forest
4x Island
2x Plains
2x Mountain
Swamp

Sideboard:
Volcanic Strength, Manic Vadal, Awakener Druid, Jinxed Idol, Serra Ascendant, Flashfreeze, Back to Nature, Warlord’s Axe, Phantom Beast, Wurm’s Tooth, Tome Scour, Kraken’s Eye, Hunters’ Feast, Tireless Missionaries, Duress, Berserkers of Blood Ridge and two Pyretic Ritual.

Round one was versus a Black Red agressive deck. The Brindle Boars seemed key in staying alive until i could resolve a board sweeper and take control with Sun Titan, ofcourse the Sun Titan would die to a doomblade, but the Gravedigger brought it back when needed.

Round two was versus a Blue White controldeck with Baneslayer as finisher, but Baneslayer just falls over to Force…Game 2: I needed my counterspells to resolve the boardsweepers, since my opponent had some manaleaks and cancels of his own.

Round three again i met a Black Red agro deck, again Brindle Boards and Sun Titan saved the day. This guy was the one who passed me the Titan and hoped he wouldn’t regret passing it along and loose to it.

Winning the draft was very good for my confidence, so i decided i was done with drafting practise for PT Amsterdam and keep this good feeling until the PT Draft.

My father in law and i have made a lot of video footage at Pro Tour Amsterdam last week, i hope we get it edited to show off before the end of this month.

Every year i was making the PTQ’s top-8 atleast once, but never i was able to take the slot. Time has changed. Last weekend i won a PTQ and qualified for Pro Tour Amsterdam 2010! Awesome! This is like every competitive magic players dream, playing the Magic Pro Tour. How did i get there?

The White Weenie deck can be a uber agro and beat most decks if they have a subpar draw (Luck for the win?). Its a very consistent deck and after adding Elspeth it started to take off, but still it was loosing a lot to Jund and U/W Control. After going 0-2 in PTQ Aachen, i cut the Kor Firewalkers for more flyers and replaced Path to Exiles with Harm’s Way to make the deck even more agressive, this is the way to battle Jund, more pressure then they can remove.

My PTQ decklist:

Toleria White(RoE Standard)
4 Steppe Lynx
4 White Knight
4 Knight of the White Orchid
4 Kor Skyfisher
4 Student of Warfare
3 Kor Aeronaut
4 Honor of the Pure
4 Brave the Elements
4 Harms Way
4 Elspeth, Knight-Errant

13 Plains
4 Marsh Flats
4 Arid Mesa

Sideboard:
4 Devout Lightcaster
4 Silence
4 Oblivion Ring
3 Day of Judgment

The Tournament
Only about 50 players showed up for the PTQ in Utrecht another 50 players where playing the Legacy Event.

The tournament started with the gathering of the decklists, the judge asked us to double check the list. Something was wrong with my list, it counted up to 59 cards. How can this happen? I always double double check and write the list the day before to make sure things like this don’t happen. After counting the cards in my deck it also counted up to 59. I had no other cards on me but a fourth Elspeth, which i took with me just in-case i decided to cut a Harm’s Way. Scary stuff, it stressed me out a lot, but after three minutes of counting, correcting the list and finding a extra sleeve, i hoped it would be correct and all…

As i didn’t expect to win this PTQ i didn’t make a lot of notes so the matchups dont contain a lot of details.

Round 1: vs Bant
I am still shaking from the decklist problems, but game one i play a agressive horde and use Brave the Elements to walk straight tru a turn five Baneslayer Angel.
(1-0)

Round 2: vs Jund
I don’t remember the games any more, but i won
(2-0)

Round 3: vs Turboland
First game i mulligan to 5 and my opponent just didn’t want to die, he takes 3-4 extra turns and wins. The second game i win after he played Pelleka Wurm. I gave my creatures pro green with the Brave the Elements. I loose the Third game. Personal i think this is a good matchup. He only has green creatures, which makes the Brave great and silence will stop him from chaining extra turns and killing me with plants tokens.
(2-1)

Round 4: vs Mono Green Agro
We get a deck check. Started praying i didn’t make a mistake with the 59 card thing. Judges said everything was fine, pfew! This match was the most intense of the day, we both rushed creatures out and got in to complex attacking and blocking situations. Game one i don’t kill Nissa when i have the chance and he gains something like 12 life. Oops, but i learned something, game two i keep killing Nissa and Garruk and take it down. I won game 3 because he didnt gain 6 life with Nissa, but got him self a creature, which was a bit greedy. I think he thought he could win next turn, ofcourse its Brave the Elements for the win.
(3-1)

Round 5: vs Bant
First game my opponent didn’t see he didnt have a white mana source in has hand and doesnt have a play until turn four. I also win the second game.
(4-1)

Round 6: vs Grixis
Intentional Draw into the top-8

So, by evading the U/W control decks i made it into the top-8, nice.

Round 7: vs Vengevine Jund
My opponent has removal heavy but creature light draws and i have more creatures then he has removal. Won this the matche pretty fast.

Round 8: vs Bant
Game one its Brave the Elements for the win. The second game is more complex. Boarded in Day of Judgement for Harm’s Way. I wipe the board with Elspeth in play, but he comes back with Gideon and Warmonks. Game 3 is the best WW plan ever. Level student and protect it with Brave the Elements. He removed my first student with bant charm, but i have another one with atleast three Brave the Elements on hand. It goes all the way after it gains double strike.

Round 9: vs R/G tokens
Game one i made a big mistake, he wins with overrun while i though i was pretty save on 17 life. No, not again, i really thought i just gave away my PTQ win there. This didnt improve my plays in the two following games, but after all i took it down with my flyers, although i again gave my opponent outs which shouldn’t be needed if i played it more safe. But after 9 hours of magic we prolly both are making an equal ammount of mistakes and i take it down!

Its hard to believe i really won the PTQ with a White Weenie deck, but some decent matchups, a bit of luck and some good plays seem to add up with a very consistent deck.

Student of Warfare combined with Brave the Elements and a hand of Elspeth really did most of the hard work of slaying my opponents. The only thing i might be changing is cutting the White Knight for Sigiled Paladin, since the Knight is just a 2/2 dork in most of the matchups. The Paladin makes the deck even more agressive and this will also help in the Jund matchup.

This weeked i will be playing the Dutch Nationals, then we wait for M11 and after that we can start preparing for Pro Tour Amsterdam! Wish me luck.
