Cleaning up large disks with gt5 and du

without comments

Our Linux server NFS shares disk drive was nearly full, it needed desperate cleaning.

Using gt5 to parse the du output to generate a html view, which you can browse on a text based browser, sweet! I tried Boabab, but it kept crashing on me.

Most of the large files where temporary backups and such of VM’s and Datasets.

How to find the largest directories on a filesystem:

  • sudo du -akx /mnt/nfsshare/data > /tmp/du.log
  • gt5 /tmp/du.log

The du.log file for our NFS disk was about 2GB and parsing it with gt5 took about a half hour. Cleaning the files took some more time, but now we have enough space again.
